It’s Friday, the end of a fairly mellow week for me. Sort of the quiet before the storm as there’s lots of changes and travel afoot.

Here are some tunes — recent discoveries as well as old favs — to help keep balance in an increasingly off-kilter time.

“Beltloops and Bluejeans,” by Catherine Feeney, from the CD “Catherine Feeney.” I listened to the CD like crazy traveling through Asia last year. There was something about the stripped down production — limited processing on her voice and guitar — that really appealed while overlooking rice paddies and healing from motorcycle and boating accidents. “Don’t Be Shy,” by Cat Stevens, from the soundtrack to the movie “Harold and Maude.” Cat Stevens is like an old friend from my childhood. His dulcet tones always pick me up in the best possible way. So imagine my shock this week when I found an old song I never even knew existed!

“Game For Fools (Mara Carlyle Ukelady Mix)” from Jamie Lidell’s “Multiply Additions” CD. I’ve run into Mara Carlyle in the most unexpected places. This one’s a beautiful reversion of the great Jamie Lidell song that I’m posting for Marty. I’ll see you in a few hours my friend!

“Green Grass,” from Cibelle’s album “The Shine of Electric Leaves.” Never has a Tom Waits song sounded so damn sultry, sexy … erotic even.

“Nylon Smile,” by Portishead from their forthcoming CD, “Third.” It’s seems like ages ago that Beth Gibbons et. al. first amazed and astounded. Shit, I guess it was. This song sounds like a long-lost friend who’s come back to remind you that everything is still all fucked up.
