My friend (and musician) Josh Kamensky turned me on to this Brooklyn-based band Bishop Allen, who write lovely, earnest pop songs about things like love, loneliness and alienation.

As it turns out, another good friend, Rafi Benjamin (who’s been known to write his own brand of earnest pop), went to college with the guys in the band and knew them when they were staking out to claim irony as their own, private brand.
“Their band in college was called ‘Depeche Mode,’” Rafi told me. “That’s how ironic they were.”
