The Burning Man organization announced the 2008 arts grants and there’s some really impressive stuff. Of course, artists like Kate Raudenbush, Michael Christian and the Flaming Lotus Girls always amaze; there are some notable absences — most notable being Dan Das Mann and Karen Cusolito. But after last year’s insanity, who can blame them for taking a year off?
It’s a very mixed bag, as usual, but there are a few things that look too cool to imagine. Luckily, most of the approved proposals come with illustrations.
- Glenn Easley’s Harmonic Geometry
- Two from the False Profits: The Hydrogen Economy and Pyrocardium
- Benson Trent’s Illusion (but why is it on the ground? Imagine this if it was airborne!)
- Lepidodgera, by Rachel Norman, Mike Thielvoldt, Lira Filippini, and Jake Haskell (though I’m not sure I fully like the idea of funding art cars…)
- Yechdosay Chahar’s Pictures of You
- Jen Lewin’s Pool looks awesome!
- The Cave, by Chassy Cleland and Henya Emmer
Sadly (but also happily), I won’t be bringing art to the playa this year. The last two years of “Fireflies on the Playa (with apologies to Yayoi Kusama),” above, were extremely rewarding and helped me find my own path to and through the event. But this year, which I’ve always considered my last before a (perhaps extended) hiatus, I’ll be participating through my camp and with my bike.
